Classes

I have two figure classes starting soon at my school in Victoria BC as well as a portrait drawing class for youth.

Block-in Figure Drawing starts April 28th, Thursdays 6:30-9:30pm
The block-in is a very important step in drawing well, it's the foundation and core that everything is built upon.

Long Pose Figure Drawing starts May 15th Sunday evenings 6:30 to 9:30pm.
One pose for the five weeks. One of my favorite classes and a great class to refine and develop your drawing ability.

Youth Portrait Drawing starts May 2nd. Mondays 4:15 to 5:45pm. For youth age 11-17. If you know of someone this age who is looking for a focused, skill based drawing class, please feel free to pass this info on to them.

Portrait Drawing Demo

Here are a few photos from my portrait drawing demo at my school opening!

Talking about Form and Cast shadows

The importance of looking at your work in a mirror, also good for checking out how good you look ;) There is a story there for sure....

How our eyes fool us all the time with this optical illusion

And the magic bowl for warding of aliens and showing form light and highlights

So shiny!

The model may need a break but I keep going, or sometimes it's time to take over and do it all, model, draw, and fly the airplane home

Using mats with holes in them to isolate value and compare them. Light on the chin compared to forehead, which is lighter??

How the placement of the ear relates to the tilt of the head. Or what is this thing on my head, it was not there this morning?

Check out these stylish shoes from the good people at Industry of All Nations

Wrapping it all up and signing up the masses!

My demo painting from my last oil portrait painting class

My last 7 week portrait painting wrapped up last week. My next one starts April 6th, there is still some space in the class. All the info for the next class is here.

I paint alongside my students in these classes. I start each class with a short 30 minute demo and then help students and paint on my demo painting time allowing. By working alongside my students they get to see how my painting develops and how I solve different things in my painting.

Here are photos of my demo at the end of each week.

Week One. We worked on drawing, getting the contour and major form and cast shadows

Week Two. After transferring the drawing to a toned canvas we started to block in the local color using a full palette of colors

Week Three. Here we started to finish small areas by carefully observing the way light falls and wraps around forms. I managed to get the nose to eye to cheek painted.

Week Four. Conditioning to model the form

Week Five. Finished the ear and blocked in the color of the hair.

Week Six. Finished the hair.

Week Seven. Finished the sweater and finished the painting!
